“A Home Away from Home”: Bernadette’s Story of Care, Connection and Community at SSA

When Bernadette speaks about her role as a Senior Support Worker at Southern Supported Accommodation, the warmth in her words is unmistakable.

“I found my passion for caring at the age of 10,” Bernadette reflects. “I was heavily involved in caring for my Nana, and from that point on, it just became who I am. Caring has always been a part of my life, both personally and professionally.”

Now, seven months into her journey with SSA, Bernadette says she’s found a place where her passion not only grows but is deeply valued.

Care that Feels Like Family

Bernadette describes SSA as a place where participants feel a strong sense of “being and belonging.”

“It really is like a family,” she says. “There’s a relaxed, homely atmosphere and flexibility in routine, which helps everyone feel comfortable. The whole team is passionate about what they do, it’s obvious in how deeply they care, not just for participants, but for one another too.”

That team spirit is something Bernadette returns to again and again. “I love that we work together to plan and troubleshoot even the most complex situations, whether it’s supporting someone through palliative care or helping participants engage in meaningful, fun activities.”

She recalls a recent situation where a participant, who had previously struggled to engage with the community, was supported to attend a local art class. “It was something small, but the joy on their face spoke volumes. That’s what we’re here for, to bring those moments of happiness.”

Every Day is Different, Every Moment Matters

One of the things Bernadette loves most is the variety in her role.

“There’s always something new; it keeps things fresh and makes you feel connected to the whole organisation,” she says. “Our management team are incredibly approachable and supportive. They really foster a safe environment where everyone is respected and valued.”

SSA’s open door culture ensures team members are encouraged to grow and share ideas. Bernadette, who’s passionate about continuous improvement, is always thinking about how to enhance the participant experience even further.

“I love seeing participants out and about, experiencing new things,” she says. “Excursions and daily activities have such a positive impact, they help people grow, build confidence, and connect with their community.

Raising the Standard, Together

The standard of care at SSA, according to Bernadette, is “exceptional.”

“We go above and beyond, not just meeting needs like hygiene and nutrition, but caring for every part of a person: their emotional wellbeing, environment, and passions. Even pets are welcome here, which adds a whole other layer of emotional support and joy.”

That level of commitment is what Bernadette believes sets SSA apart in the industry.“We need more support workers who are in it for the right reasons,” she says.“This isn’t just a job, it’s a life changing career. If you’re thinking about it, I say absolutely go for it.”

Outside the Job, Inside the Community

When she’s not at work, Bernadette enjoys football, crafting, fishing and being outdoors. She’s also heavily involved in the Aboriginal community and finds joy and meaning in her spiritual practices.

It’s clear that whether at work or in life, Bernadette leads with heart.

Bernadette sums up her experience at SSA in one sentence:

“It’s a welcoming, caring home away from home for all.”

And when asked what she’s learned in her time here, she doesn’t hesitate:

“I’ve gained a deeper compassion and insight, seeing each participant as a whole person with their own story, their own strength.”
